Our top tips for growing successful Clematis.

Planting

Make sure you plant it deep; clematis roots like to be dark and cold. Plant the crown (the part where the roots meet the stem) about 2 inches below the soil surface, watering the hole well before planting, this will help the roots settle quicker.

Support

Make sure you provide good support for your clematis as the stems can be quite weak and brittle. If they flop mid season they can be hard to rescue and may snap so make sure when fresh growth starts you can tie it into good support. Trellis, wires and obelisks are all excellent ways to support your clematis in the garden.

Pruning

Follow our pruning guide, this helps the plant to be successful and stay healthy. You can find our blog on pruning groups here

Feeding

Clematis don’t need feeding that often. Feed at the start of the season and again at the end of the season. We suggest using standard tomato feed or multi purpose plant feed, as this will help your Clematis to produce a wonderful display of flowers. If you find that your plant has a potential disease or doesn’t look well then make sure you spray your plant with Plant disease defence spray.
